Why website prices vary so much
Ask five web designers in New Zealand what a website costs and you will get five very different answers. That is not because some are honest and some are not. It is because "a website" can mean a single page that tells people how to contact you, or a full online store that takes payments, tracks stock and sends order emails.
Price follows three things: how many pages and features you need, how custom the design is, and how quickly you need it. Everything else, such as the platform or who builds it, changes how you pay rather than how much work is involved. The prices on this page are the same ones our quote builder uses, so you can check any number against an itemised estimate.
What you get at each starting price
Every site we build is designed to work on phones, tablets and desktops. The starting prices below assume a template-based design adapted to your brand, and the quote builder lists exactly which pages each package includes.
- Landing page, from $1,500: one focused page with a strong hero section. Ideal for a new business, a single service or a campaign.
- Business website, from $4,500: a multi-page site with home, about, services and contact pages. The most common choice for trades, clinics, consultants and hospitality.
- Online store, from $10,000: product listings, product pages, a cart and checkout. Payment processing is an add-on, priced below.
- MVP or startup product, from $14,000: a lean first version of a software idea, with a landing page, sign-in and the one core feature you need to test with real users.
- Custom web app, from $18,000: dashboards, portals and internal tools with a login, built around how your business works. Bookings and payments are add-ons.
What makes a website cost more
Most quotes grow for the same handful of reasons. Knowing them up front helps you decide what you need now and what can wait for a second phase.
- Design: a fully custom design adds $3,500, and a premium creative design with animations adds $5,000. If you already have designs, the price goes down instead.
- Extra pages: each page beyond those included adds {extraPage}.
- Content management: a CMS so you can edit text and images yourself adds $800.
- Search setup: technical SEO and metadata work adds $600.
- More than one language: multi-language support adds $1,200.
- Bookings and payments: a booking calendar adds $900, and payment processing adds $800.
- AI: an AI chat assistant that answers customer questions adds $2,000.
- Speed: a priority timeline adds 20% of the project total, and a rush timeline adds 40%.
Ongoing costs after launch
A website is not a one-off cost. It needs hosting, a domain name and occasional updates. You can host the site yourself, in which case we hand everything over and there is no monthly fee from us. If you would rather not deal with servers, managed hosting starts at $49 a month and includes SSL and backups, with higher plans at $99 and $199 a month adding a CDN, more frequent backups, monitoring and priority support.
A domain name is a small yearly cost paid to a domain registrar, and we recommend registering it in your own name so you always control it. Budget for small content changes over time too: new photos, updated prices and seasonal offers keep a site useful and give Google a reason to visit again.
GST and how prices are shown
All our prices are in New Zealand dollars and exclude GST, which is added at 15% on the final invoice. If your business is GST-registered, you can usually claim that GST back, so the price excluding GST is the real cost to you. When you compare quotes from different designers, check that you are comparing like with like, because some show GST-inclusive prices and some do not.
DIY builder, freelancer or studio?
A do-it-yourself website builder has the lowest upfront cost and is a sensible way to test an idea. The trade-off is your own time, a monthly subscription that never ends, and limits on design, speed and search features that are hard to escape later.
A freelancer can be great value for a straightforward site. A studio costs more than doing it yourself, but you get design, development, hosting and support from one team, and someone accountable when something needs fixing. Whichever you choose, ask who owns the code and the domain, what happens if you want to move, and what is included after launch.
How to keep the cost down
Start with what earns money now and add the rest later. A well-built landing page or small business site can launch quickly and grow page by page. Prepare your text and photos before the build starts, because waiting on content is the most common cause of delays. Choose the standard timeline unless a launch date really is fixed, and leave nice-to-have features for a second phase once you know what customers use.
