Hire Doris: building an AI interviewer that explains its scores

The problem

A single job ad can bring in dozens of applications, but a recruiter only has time to talk to a handful of people. Everyone else is judged on a CV alone, or waits so long for a reply that they accept another offer. Good candidates get lost simply because nobody had time to hear them.

Automated screening tools exist, but most of them are a black box. They rank people without saying why, which is unfair to candidates and risky for employers, especially under rules like the EU AI Act that expect high-risk AI to be explainable and overseen by a person.

Our solution

The core is a real-time voice interview. The candidate opens a link and talks to Doris in the browser, with no app to install. The audio runs over WebRTC to a real-time speech model, so Doris can listen, respond and ask follow-up questions like a human interviewer instead of reading out a fixed script.

Every answer is scored against the criteria the recruiter chose for the role, and every score comes with a written explanation the recruiter can audit. Recordings, timestamped transcripts and flagged key moments sit on one review page, so a person always makes the final decision.

Around that core sits everything a real SaaS product needs: company accounts with separate data per customer, subscription billing and credit packs through Stripe, sign-in with Google, Microsoft or LinkedIn, transactional email, and a public 120-second demo that anyone can try without signing up.

How it is engineered

The web app is Next.js and React. The API is .NET with PostgreSQL, and Redis coordinates live interview sessions. The AI layer sits behind its own provider and budget checks, with consent and audit steps built into the pipeline rather than bolted on later.

It ships the same way we ship client work: Docker images built by GitHub Actions, deployed behind a reverse proxy, with structured logs and metrics dashboards so problems show up before customers report them. Thousands of automated tests across the frontend and backend run before every release.

Where it stands today

Hire Doris is live at hiredoris.com and runs real interviews in production. The same codebase powers a sister brand, Reclutadoris, for Spain, in English and Spanish, which is the same multi-brand, multi-language setup we can build for a client.
